Valentine's Day 2014

Are you going out with your special someone on Valentine's Day? I've put together some of my favorite items that I would definitely choose for my night on the town.  I've included some of my favorite designers:  Melinda Maria Jewelry, Michele "Serein" watch, and my latest obsession: Red Valentino Couture Bow D'Orsay Pumps.

January Odds and Ends

After we had opened up all our presents and cleaned up the mess, Daisy decided that she would lay under the tree.  This just cracked me up!
My kids gave me customized Nikes for Christmas.  If you go to the Nike Website you can customize your own pair.  You can put up to 6 characters on each of the tongues to inspire you or whatever.  They put my nickname.
Katie sent me this picture of Darla and I just die.  So cute!  She's playing hide n go seek.  "You can't see me".  Dying!
I wouldn't call myself an artist by any stretch of the imagination, this was more a craft.  I made this little canvas piece for Katie's apt.  Painted the canvas pearl white (Martha Stewart Acrylic Paints) and sponged metallic gold dots onto it.  Martha even has a little round sponge on a stick that I used to make the dots. Everything found at Michaels. Easy Peasy!

And this is just one happy dog!  I love when she smiles.

Girls First Visit to San Francisco

Katie and Delaney's birthdays are a month apart.  One is a week after Christmas and the other's is a month.  What do you get these girls who just got gifts for Christmas?  The answer: a trip to San Francisco!  They've passed through a couple of times when they were little, but have never visited for longer than a couple of hours.  One of Katie's best friends from high school, Iustina, lives in SF so a visit was in order.
They had beautiful, clear, warm weather (68-72 degrees) the whole weekend.  I heard declarations of love for the city.
The city is so interesting, so beautiful, so fun, so much to do and see.  It didn't hurt that they were enjoying Iustina's friendship and had the knowledge of a local to show them around.

Sadly, Lombard Street was not in bloom in January, but they still enjoyed it.

They loved the parks.  Everyone was so friendly, just hanging out, and enjoying the day.
They even saw a parade in China Town.
Beautiful architecture everywhere you look.
Sadly, the weekend was over so soon.  They can't wait to go back!
Thank you, Iustina, for your kind hospitality.

Funny Snap Chat Photos

Have you heard of snap chat?  It's an app for your phone and you take pictures and send them to friends and they can look at it for like a minute and then it disappears forever.  Katie has perfected the funny snap chat.  I'm not sure if part of the app lets you draw on your picture and write words or if you take the pic, add the drawing,  upload it to snap chat and then you send it.  I do not have snap chat, but whenever she has created something fantastic, she will send it to me.  There are some that are hilarious but I just can't find them in my phone. :(

and her new muse:

When I need a good laugh, I look at these.  They crack me up!
Needless to say, everyone looks forward to Katie's snap chats.

Most Comfortable Heels I've Ever Owned

Yesterday, I went to Nordstrom to buy a birthday gift for a friend.  Well, the jewelry counter was next to the shoe salon and the next thing I know, I'm the proud owner of these Navy Michael Kors "Carla" heels.  I've heard legendary stories from my middle daughter and my sister in law about how comfy these shoes are. When I saw the navy, I decided to try them on.  OMG!  They are so comfy and best of all EASY TO WALK IN.  They don't feel like heels at all.  Super comfy and stylish.  Legend has it that they can be worn for HOURS and your feet don't mind it all.  I'm super excited because I am a toddler when it comes to walking in high heel shoes and these are so don't feel like heels at all.  Fortunately, they come in many colors.

Do yourself a favor and try these on.

And since I was in the jewelry section...

Cooking Class-Regional Cuisines of India

Last Tuesday morning I took a Regional Cuisines of India Class at my local Sur La Table.  It was fantastic!  It was a small class of 5 and we prepared each dish from start to finish.  Usually in a bigger class, they have you split up and one group prepares a dish and another group prepares a different one and certain key things are brought to the whole groups attention.  This class, however, felt more intimate and individual.  The cost of the class was $65 and we ate what me made at the end. We made 5 delicious dishes:

Curried Vegetable Samosas ( Northern India)
Gingered Coconut Curry w/Shrimp (Southern India)
Pork Vindaloo (Western India)
Pineapple-Tamarind Chutney (Eastern India)
Cilantro-Scented Basmati Rice

From top left clockwise: Ginger Coconut Curry w/Shrimp, Samosas, Pork Vindaloo mixed with the Pineapple Chutney and Cilantro Scented Basmati Rice.
I want to share the recipe that I think everyone would like, although it all was very tasty.

Gingered Coconut Curry with Shrimp
Yields 4 servings

1/4 cup vegetable or canola oil
2 med. shallots, peeled and thinly sliced
4 large cloves of garlic, peeled and finely minced
3 tbsp. grated fresh ginger
2 tsp. ground cumin
2 tsp. ground coriander
2 tsp. curry powder
1/2 tsp. ground cardamom
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper

2 med. carrots peeled and cut into 1/4 thick rounds
1 med. red bell pepper, trimmed, cored and cut into 1/8 inch strips
1 (13 oz. can) coconut milk
1 cup fresh or frozen thawed peas
1 lb. large shrimp, peeled and deveined
1 bunch (3/4lb) fresh spinach, stems removed
kosher salt and freshly ground pepper

1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves for garnish
1/4 cup cashew nuts for garnish

Heat a large skillet over med. heat until hot but not smoking.  Add oil, swirling to coat, then add shallots, garlic and ginger.  Cook, stirring constantly, until shallots are soft, about 4 to 5 minutes.  Add dried spices and cook, stirring constantly, until spices smell toasted, about 2 minutes, taking care not to burn them.

Add carrots and bell pepper strips, stirring to coat with oil and spices.  Cook, stirring occasionally, for 2 minutes.  Add coconut milk and green peas, stirring well to combine.  Stir in shrimp and spinach.  Simmer until the shrimp is pink and cooked through and spinach wilts, stirring often, about 4 to 6 minutes.  Taste and season with salt and pepper.

To serve, place curry in a serving bowl and garnish with cilantro leaves and cashews.  Serve immediately.

Beauty Blending Sponge

Have you heard about this new Beauty Blending Sponge?  It is fantastic.  My daughters got it for me for Christmas and I love it.  It is easy to hold and makes applying your foundation a breeze.  It gets into the hard to apply areas and your foundation goes on smooth with no lines.  You also use less foundation when you apply with this little beauty.  It's kinda expensive (on sale now at Amazon for $14.99), but you can rinse it out and use it over and over.    Check it out, you will love it.

Game Day - Hot Dog Bar

Hot Dog Bar via Hostess With the Mostess

When I was thinking about what to make for the playoffs this weekend, a Hot Dog Bar came to mind.  A station where you could make your favorite hot dogs, everything right there where you need it.  Some choices and some recipes.  At my hot dog bar, I'm going to feature the Chicago Dog, the Chili Dog and the Martha Stewart Hot Dog.
What I like about the Hot Dog Bar above, is she has laid out all the ingredients needed and provided  recipes for certain types of hot dogs.
I love a GOOD hot dog. To me, that means you have to start with a quality hot dog.  I've found that I love the Hebrew National Line.
This is the supreme, flavor busting hot dog.  Hebrew National's Beef Knockwurst.  To die for.  My neighbor's little boy loves hot dogs and she was buying the regular brands for him and he liked them. Then one day she ran out and asked to borrow a hot dog.  I gave her one of these.  Her son went crazy.  BEST hot dog he's ever had!  WW 7pts.

Next in line for flavor is the Hebrew National Beef Franks.  These are the hot dogs they use at Costco.  They are delicious.  WW 4 pts.

If you are watching your weight like me, this will be your choice for your hot dog.  Very good and low in fat and WW points.  I will also be using a "Lite" bun.   My favorite way to cook these is either BBQ or fried.   I don't boil them.   WW 3 pts.

So first up is your basic chili dog.
I use Bear Creek Chili Mix for my Chili.

Chili
Onions
Cheese
Jalepeños
Mustard

Bear Creek  Chili found in the soup section of the supermarket

My new favorite hot dog is the Chicago Dog
I had to search for Sport Peppers and ended up buying them on Amazon.  They are quite expensive, coming in at $16.00 a bottle!!!  They make the hot dog, so you have to have them.  Worth every penny.

Kosher Pickle Spear
Dash of Celery Salt
Yellow Mustard
Sport Peppers
Hot Dog Relish
Onions
Tomatoes

I purchased Vienna Sport Peppers from Amazon.  I heard a rumor that you could get sport peppers at Walmart, but I have not been in to confirm.

One of my all time favorites is Pink's Martha Stewart Hot Dog.
Its Delicious!

Relish
Onions
Bacon
Chopped Tomatoes
Sauerkraut
Sour Cream

To top everything off, serve the hot dogs with Baked Beans, Potato Salad and / or Chips.

Go Broncos!
