Smells and Memories

Orange Blossoms
Baking Bread

It's funny how different smells can trigger memories. I mostly thought of songs as memory triggers. I recently received an email and it asked for your four favorite smells. Thinking quickly, a few popped into my head. But after really thinking about it, I began to think of some favorite smells and the memories associated with them:

Orange Blossoms - growing up in Orange County, I used to smell this a lot. It is like perfume. My memory associated with it is when HH and I bought our new house (19 years ago now). We used to drive through an orange grove to get there. It smelled heavenly. The excitement, the kids in the back seat and the smell of orange blossoms.

Baking Bread - It was always a treat when I would go to visit my Nanny and she would be baking bread. I could eat nothing else. It smelled so good, it tasted so good and I loved my Nanny. Great memory for me.

Diesel Fuel - When HH and I lived in London, all the buses ran on Diesel Fuel. It filled the air. If we were out for a whole day, I would have a headache and would feel like I had a layer of diesel fuel grime on me. So whenever I smell this, I think of myself walking down a busy street in London EXPLORING.

Movie Popcorn: All buttery, a big huge tub. Whenever we went to the movies, we got a big tub of buttery popcorn and a coke. MMMM (I never, ever, get that now. I also associate popcorn with being on a diet thanks to microwaveable bags).

The Beach - The beach consists of the ocean, the sand, the hot sun, music and SUNTAN OIL . Whenever anyone opens up a bottle of Coppertone or Hawaiian Tropic, I am transported back to my high school days when I spent way too much time at the beach. Newport Beach to be specific.

I could go on forever. These are the ones that popped into my head after some consideration.

What are your favorite smells?

What a creative and fun post. I have a very acute sense of smell so I associate events to aromas too.

I think buttery popcorn is one of my favorites!

Very interesting post. They say smell is our stongest memory sense. I love the smell of fresh pine; a fresh cut lawn; and that almost musty smell after the rain.

Happy new year!

I learned in one of my psych classes in college that of all the senses, smell has the strongest tie to memory.
I always think it's interesting when I use an old shampoo I used years ago, I'm immediately taken back to that time in my life.
This is a strange one, but my dad had an old tool box and I LOVED the smell of it. I can't even explain what it smelled like. One time when I was home last year I told him I needed some tools and felt left out that I was never sent off to college or NY with a tool box. I mentioned how much I loved his tool box (not, in a hinting way, I was just mentioning it) and he immediately told me I could have it! He got it when he was about 15 or so. I was SO excited. He wrote his name and year in it, and mine as well. The smell of that tool box makes me think of tagging along with my dad on Saturday mornings as a kid while he fixed things in the garage.
Sadly, for some reason that tool box doesn't have the strong smell anymore. I don't know why. He was just here visiting me and I mentioned it and he said he'd noticed it too. So sad.
Oh well, at least I've got the box and the memories, right?
On another note, the smell of a roast in the oven is one of my favorites. It makes me think of coming home from church on Sundays. Even though I don't eat roast, I love the smell. :)
One last one.....Red Bull. It makes me think of my last semester in college, which was by far more difficult than any semester. It immediately puts me back in the library where I'd study for hours on end just so I could pass History Systems of Psychology to graduate.
This was a fun post. :)
