View from terraced garden of the Greyston Mansion
In 1927 Mr. Doheny Sr. (millionaire and oil tycoon) gave his only son 12 acres in Beverly Hills to build a home for his bride and himself. They built the beautiful gothic Greystone Mansion. Mr. Doheny Jr. died a couple of years later from a murder/suicide with his personal assistance. Mrs. Doheny raised five children in the home before moving next door to the custom built Knoll house. (She had remarried, not sure if she had children with Doheny or not).
I absolutely fell in love with this house. It has beautiful tall windows that look out over the gardens and the city of L.A. It was decorated by LA designers sponsored by Veranda magazine. The house was decorated with an off white, brown, gray and green palette overall. There were rooms that varied with burst of blue in various shades, black and rich jewel tones in the great room. It was designed with furnishings of today and not 1927. You could totally imagine yourself living there. The house has wonderful bones and rooms that were impressive, but you felt cozy and it did not feel cavernous at all. It had a movie theater (we didn't get to see) and a bowling alley. It is used as a set in a lot of movies. I loved the gardens. Reminiscent of Europe, but totally California. It was donated to the city of Beverly Hills and has been declared a Historical Site. It saddens me to think that no one lives there and after the show is over, they will empty the house. You can see the house through Nov. 16, 2007. Tickets are about $30.00

The mansion is certainly beautiful. The blue-bricked roof, the spacious driveway and the stunning garden look perfect. Great job with the pictures, even though picture taking was not allowed. The pictures you took were certainly worth the risk, Janie! =)
